Topic: Colouring Dessicated coconut

Hi all

I have a little boys football stadium cake to complete. Does anyone have any idea how I coulour dessicated coconut please???
I have sugarflair colouring that could be watered down but would it make the coconut wet? Do I toast it to dry it out? I have no idea and any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Colouring Dessicated coconut

I would try and use a liquid food colouring, they are inexpensive, and available at most major stores. I get mine from Asda. A tip: always start with the smallest amount of colouring, 1/4 of a tea spoon, if that doesn't achieve the depth of colour you are after, then add another 1/4, and so on. Shouldn't make your coconut too wet, as long as you don't put too much in.Good luck.

You could try your local cake decorating shop, they will have a host of techniques and colours.

Re: Colouring Dessicated coconut

I have coloured caster sugar in the past by putting it in a bag and adding food colouring (I used Wilton gel colours) then mixing it all up. Worked really well smile

Re: Colouring Dessicated coconut

Use powder colour (sugarflair or Squires Kitchen dusts in the appropriate colour).  This will keep the coconut dry and is the way most cake decorators would colour it.

Re: Colouring Dessicated coconut

hi,

i put the coconut in a food bag drop a few drops of colour in and shake it all up til the coconut is covered evenly, it doesnt make the coconut too wet either. works really well as have done it a few times now

Wow! It never even crossed my mind to try colouring dessicated coconut or even sugar. I will definately be using these techniques in the near future!
