Topic: Hand painting- ready made regal icing.

Please help.

Im trying to hand paint ready to roll regal icing with food colouring.

It makes the icing go sticky.

Any ideas how to stop icing from doing this. Ive tried diluting the colouring and using different brushes... but nothing is working.
Help. tia

Re: Hand painting- ready made regal icing.

Hi, did you allow the icing to dry out a bit before applying colour?  The only other thing to try is mixing the colour with clear alcohol (there are special food grade alcohol mixtures available) as it evaporates much quicker, as used for royal icing.  Can't think of anything else to try.  Best of luck.

put a little cocoa butter in a saucer over hot water and mix with powdered colours as required. As per Mitch Turner (LVCC)

Re: Hand painting- ready made regal icing.

i allow the cake to dry in a room for about half a day, i use the paste colouring with vodka/gin but never put to much in, and dont keep going over the same place, like colouring in a book with felt tips ( if you go over the same place many times it starts to bobble) after painting leave over night usually

Food colouring will not work.  Use sugarcraft dusting colours mixed with isopropyl alcohol (IPA -  available from chemists).  This evaporates very quickly.  Alternatively dilute with any clear alcohol (gin or vodka) this will not evaporate quite so quickly but still works.

u need to use paste colours not liquid, add just a small amount of water to dilute and this will work.i have done several using this method.its best to leave the icing to harden for awhile before you start painting your picture aswell.
