Topic: Pirate Cake

I'm planning on making a pirate birthday cake for my nephews 4th birthday. The cake is no problems, but it's the decorating! I'd like to be able to create a pirates face on the cake (a basic one as i'm a beginner baker and decorator!) but not sure how the best way to go about it?

If i need coloured icing, it means either adding colour to ready made icing or making up my own, or buying about 5 different colours of ready made and coloured icing which could end up expensive.

Any advice?

Thank you! smile

Re: Pirate Cake

How about using an Icing Topper??  If you go onto EBay, you an get round and square sheets of icing with ANYTHING printed on them and you ice your cake and then just peel off the topper and place it on top of the icing, I then pipe around the topper so you can't see the join and they look Amazing!!!!  Really effective!!

I'm not sure if you can put links on here but I use a seller on Ebay called   EatMyPhoto  and I've bought quite a few now and they've all been fantastic!!  You can e-mail her the picture you want, just find any image online!!

Hope I've helped xx

Re: Pirate Cake

Thanks for your help.

I am planning on having a go at playing with some icing to see if i can get the hang of it, if not, I'll definitely be going down the route you advised!!

Re: Pirate Cake

How did your cake go?????  Have you made it yet? xx

Re: Pirate Cake

I've got to make it for the 28th October. Getting a bit worried about it, hoping I don't mess it up!xx

Re: Pirate Cake

Are you any good at painting?  You could make a plaque and let it dry and then using edible colour thinned with cooled, boiled water, paint the face onto the plaque.  Just stick to top of cake when dry.

Re: Pirate Cake

I'm not very good at painting no. I have all the icing colours so I'm giving it a go next week, but I have a 9"x3" cake tin, and i'm lost as to how much ingredients to use for a sponge cake! Can anyone advise?x

Re: Pirate Cake

Re: Pirate Cake

This forum doesn't appear to offer any way to upload photos. But if you can upload it to a photo-sharing site, like Flickr or Picasa, they you can post a link to it here.

Or, maybe some friendly forum member has a blog or website and would be willing to host the photo for you.
