Topic: layering cakes

I'm new to baking and decorating cakes, i usually cheat and buy them, my problem is, when i bake the individual layers, which is the easy way to put one on top of the other, do i cut the top bump part off the top of the cake, making the cake level and turn the top one up side down, is this what everyone else does when layering cakes, hope this makes sense lol
Thanks in advance

Re: layering cakes

My mother used to make and ice wedding cakes as a small business when we were kids and she used to cut them into shape everytime, if it looks right do it.

Re: layering cakes

I put the layers both "bump" side up, the filling will spread to fill out the gap in the middle. If the cake is iced with butter cream it is easy to level the top,  if the cake is left bare or sprinkled with icing sugar I think that the "bump"" makes the cake look home baked.

Re: layering cakes

if you turn yor cakes upside down onto a wire cooling tray that will flaten the top , then you use the base of the cake as the top which will give you a perfect flat surface to work on hope this makes sense
