Topic: Baking with as little cooking as possible??

I work in a newly established pre-school, with children aged between 2 and 5 years old.  We are trying to encourage the children to partake in baking and cooking activities but as the situation stands we have to travel into the main school building in order to access both a microwave and cooker, as we are so new that we have to prove ourselves viable for 3months before get permanent funding etc. thus are not yet in a situation where we can provide these items independently.  Anyway, this makes things rather awkward trying to show the children how their creations change in the oven as we cannot take them into the other building.

We have now got a list of "no-bake" recipes but most of these consist of melting chocolate and adding various ingredients to make fridge cake, or dipping apples in melted chocolate. We also have peppermint creams and coconut ice as ideas for Christmas themed recipes but none of these are particularly healthy!!

Does anyone out there have any suggestions for any other (healthier) recipes or food related activities we could do which get the children involved and interested in food in ways other than those we have currently found??

Re: Baking with as little cooking as possible??

Hello,

I’m a chef and teach year 11, try and think of what kind of food that age group eat ? ; I.e fruit salad is a good one try and get lots diferent fruits from all over the world get a big map and see if they can find where they come from? Try them on there own  And then mix it all togeather and eat they will love it.
Or just get a lot of food bits togeather sweet, sour or strong, mild and see what go and what don’t  try this link (http://allrecipes.co.uk/recipes/tag-551 … cipes.aspx) lots of thing to try hope that helps.

Re: Baking with as little cooking as possible??

Thank you, thats's good idea.  As they are so young and still developing their taste experiences we'll try everything with them.  We have made our own fruit salad at mid-morning snack, allowing the children to peel and feel various fruits, to take grapes off the vine/stem, then enjoy the complete thing but a map may be a good thing to use next time smile

thanks for the link too, I'll take a look this evening

What about a salad? Ask them to bring in lovely coloured things. Red cabbage, peppers, apples, grapes, carrots, tomatoes, pomegranate. beetroot etc. They can bring ready boiled eggs, cooked meat, tinned fish. Make lots of different dressings in lidded jam jar shakers.
My son used to love to make his own sandwich - just don't you interfere with the final ingredient choice and they'll surprise you with wonderful flavours and combinations that adults just would not considder

You might like to try a recipe like this one for Chocolate Refrigerator Squares. It doesn't require a cooker or an oven, but you do need some way of melting the butter.

Just a thought.
