Topic: Birthday Cake Deco! Help!

Hello! Happy new year to all!!! smile

My boyfriend's birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks, and he only like one type of cake "plain vanilla sponge" when it comes to decorating, he only like to have plain icing on the cake, no butter cream, cream cheese frosting or flavouring.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can decorate and pipe with just plain icing and what is the ideal consistency? I mainly use butter cream (however I still get the wrong consistency all the time).

Many Thanks!!!

Re: Birthday Cake Deco! Help!

royal icing  no flavour just icing sugar (8oz sifted) and 1 egg white mix until smooth. it should  start to lose its glossy wet shine if not add some more icing sugar if you want a stiff icing and to hold its shape for piping borders etc if not it will run slightly. hope that helps

Thank you for your information! I will give that a try. Would this work if I was to use food colouring or flavouring as such?

Many Thanks!

Re: Birthday Cake Deco! Help!

if you use colour use colour paste or gel (such as sugarflair or wilton you wont need much as it is very concentrated) as the liquid type from supermarkets will make your icing runny again. as for flavouring i've never flavoured mine but i'm sure a couple of drops wont hurt just keep an eye on your icing if it starts to get runny add a little more icing sugar. make sure you sift any icing sugar you use or you will get lumps x x x

Re: Birthday Cake Deco! Help!

I successfully made the cake! I managed to do coloured icing, but it had a slight powdered texture to it. Good thing, not a crumb was left of the cake! yayy!
