i think kenwood or kitchen aid are the best brands :
D and
produces
I was in the same position last year. I looked at the various comments on that well known site named after a river and decided that the two Ks were not for me which is why I bought a Severin (see Kenwood Chef post next to this one) The things that swung it for me were the two year guarantee and the simple package of attachments that came, in the price, with the mixer.
I do suggest that you start with a "tick list" of things you want the mixer to do. For example if you do want every attachment under the sun (potato peelers, tinopeners etc.) go for a Kenwood. If however you want a mixer just to make cakes and beat dough, then look at the market (again the big A site is a good start) and find the one that fits your "tick list".
I was told, in another forum, that the Severin was so ugly that the person writing would not have it in his (yes his!!) kitchen. I replied that I wanted a "workhorse" and not a piece of sculpture. Ah well!
I am very satisfied with my choice. As a mixer it works well and is very very easy to clean. The pack I bought includes a glass bowl blender, a mincer, a grater and a rather wierd pasta maker. The blender and mincer work very well and the grater is good for hard vegetables. The mixer has the usual three blades. The only slight minus is that, unlike the Kenwood, the blade height is not adjustable but it still mixes 99% of the contents and I just scrape the bowl for the last 1%.
Hope this advice helps.
Thanks for your post, Terfyn. I'm not in the market for a mixer myself just now, but I'm glad to have your detailed advice to refer to.
Mike

I have just got a Kenwood Chef Premier and its amazing. The KitchenAid mixers are very pretty but not as good as the Kenwood range.
