Topic: What about making bread?

I wish we could post photographs here. I have some lovely pictures of my seven and a half year old daughter baking a light granary loaf, by hand with freshly made up Allinson's Dried Active Yeast, Premium Very Strong White bread flour and Country Grain flour. She does everything herself except the hot bits with the oven. She starts the yeast working in a jug with warm water and honey, measures out the flours, salt and sunflower oil, mixes, kneads, proves to double, knocks back and puts the dough in a greased tin to rise ready for the oven and finally and most importantly she washes all the equipment and cleans the kneading surface ready for next time. Her school lunch box often has her own hand made bread in it, and we get comments back from her teachers about how nice it looks and how happy she is to tell everyone how to make their own bread.

We haven't started her using sourdough yet, but I think she will learn how to use it very quickly. The problem here is the time taken for the initial fermentation and slower first rising which require a lot more patience.

Thanks to Bakingmad's post below, picture are available now in post #3. smile

Re: What about making bread?

Hi,

As an idea if you have a  Flickr account you could add the link into the post.

As the forum is not moderated we were advised that  it was not a good idea to allow images to be uploaded direct to the forum.

Hi Bakingmad,

I didn't think of putting links to photos in. Thank you very much for the suggestion.

Preparing the yeast

Mixing the dough

Kneading

Cleaning the equipment

Finished Loaf
And it tastes as good as it looks!

Re: What about making bread?

Hi Dafyddapcennydd

I recently made plaits with my 3 eldest girls (7, 6 and 2). It was a mad experience but they did everything themselves (OK I mixed the initial dough for my 2 y/o) and made some really lovely bread to eat with our home made soup.

My parents didn't pass on many culinary skills so I've taught myself pretty much everything using books and web site over the last 10 years and I am hell-bent on passing on these skills to my 4 daughters.  It's such a great skill to pass on.

I'll post some photos on Flickr when I get the chance :-)

Re: What about making bread?

Read the thread with interest... I have to cofess (gulp) I use a breadmaker! Am I going to get drummed out the Brownies?? But seriously I wondered that with the Maker I have: http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/2 … egory.html  is there a minimum age for using it? I'm sure a sensible 7 year old if supervised can give it a go...  love to get all my boys into cooking and baking... but they seem so preoccupied with the Internet and on-line Games! :-(
