Chocolate Orange Cupcakes Ingredients

100 grams Plain White Flour (Allinson Nature Friendly) Plain White Flour (Allinson Nature Friendly)
40 grams Cocoa Powder
140 grams Golden Caster Sugar (Billington's) Golden Caster Sugar (Billington's)
40 grams Butter Unsalted, softened
Salt Pinch
0.50 tsp Pure Orange Extract (Nielsen-Massey) Pure Orange Extract (Nielsen-Massey)
1.50 tsp Baking Powder
1 Free Range Eggs Free Range Eggs
120 ml Milk Whole Milk

1 sachet Chocolate Flavour Icing Sugar (Silver Spoon Create) Chocolate Flavour Icing Sugar (Silver Spoon Create)
15 ml Water Warm
100 grams Butter
0.50 tsp Pure Orange Extract (Nielsen-Massey) Pure Orange Extract (Nielsen-Massey)

How to make Chocolate Orange Cupcakes

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C, Gas 5, and line a 12 bun muffin tin with muffin cases. method tip
  2. Using a hand held electric whisk or freestanding mixer mix the butter, sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt on a low speed until it is the texture of breadcrumbs method tip
  3. Put the egg in a jug and whisk by hand. Add the milk and orange extract and mix together method tip
  4. Pour ¾ of the milk mixture into the dry ingredients & mix on low speed, then mix on a medium speed until smooth & thick
  5. Spoon the mixture into the paper cases until ½ full
  6. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until risen and springy to the touch. method tip
  7. Leave to cool slightly and then place on a wire rack
  8. To make the frosting mix the icing sugar and water by hand to form a paste, then add the butter, mixing slowly, then increase the speed to high and whisk until soft & fluffy.
  9. Add the orange extract and mix again
  10. Top the cooled cupcakes with frosting with a palette knife
  11. Sprinkle each cupcake with chocolate hearts
