Soda Bread Ingredients

250 grams Plain Wholemeal Flour (Allinson) Plain Wholemeal Flour (Allinson)
250 grams Plain White Flour (Allinson Nature Friendly) Plain White Flour (Allinson Nature Friendly)
1 tsp Salt
1 tsp Bicarbonate Of Soda
1.50 tsp Cream of tartar
25 grams Butter
335 ml Buttermilk
60 ml Water warm

How to make Soda Bread

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/ Fan 180°C/Gas Mark 6. Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartar into a large bowl, then stir in the salt. method tip
  2. Lightly rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. method tip
  3. Make a well in the centre and gradually add the buttermilk and enough of the water to form a soft dough
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly, then shape into a 20cm round. Place on a baking sheet and, using a sharp knife, mark a deep cross on the top.
  5. Bake the loaf for 30 minutes or until risen and golden brown. Cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or cold. method tip

"What can you do if you cannot get Buttermilk? I don't think Supermarkets sell it but I think you can use ordinary milk and lemon juice and would appreciate some advice as I would love to make this sometime."
