Method

  1. Step 1:

Preheat your oven to  180ºC/160ºC fan /gas 4 and line a baking tray with greased proof paper.

  2. Step 2:

In a bowl, mix together the  softened butter and half the caster sugar with a wooden spoon. Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract. Beat this together to combine.

  3. Step 3:

Using a sieve, add the flour and then mix it together until well combined. The dough will form and you'll need to use your hands at this point. Keep mixing until a dough is formed.

  4. Step 4:

Lightly flour a surface for your dough. Using a rolling pin, roll out your dough to about 1/2 cm thick.

  5. Step 5:

Use your circluar cutters to cut out 'heads' and 'bodies' for your BBQ biscuits. You'll need both a head and body to make one completed biscuit.

To fix the head and body together- use a sharp knife. Cut a slither out of the larger circle to fit the smaller circle to it. We used a cutlery knife to smooth the edges together. It's a little fiddly, but doable. You now have the shape of a BB8.

  6. Step 6:

CAREFULLY place your BBQ raw biscuit onto a lined baking tray and repeat until you have used all the biscuit dough. Place in the oven and bake for 10 minutes or until the edges become golden.

  7. Step 7:

Once your biscuits have baked, remove them from the oven and leave to cool completely before decorating.

  8. Step 8:

    Let the decoration process begin!

Make up the royal icing using the packet instructions. This is going to be the white glossy base colour of your BB8s. Pipe this icing onto the biscuits all over and leave to set completely at room temperature before starting the rest of the detail.

  9. Step 9:

To create your grey icing for the detail, mix together icing sugar and water in a bowl until you get a smooth paste. You're looking for a consistency which runs off the back of the spoon like a really thick custard. If you've added too much water, bring it back by adding more icing sugar. Similarly, if your mixture is too thick, add a teaspoon of water at a time until the desired consistency has been met.

Add a drop of black food gel colouring to make a light grey colour overall.

  10. Step 10:

Using a rolling pin, roll out your orange fondant and carefully cut out the decoration using a knife. Use a small amount of the grey water icing you've just made as glue and stick the orange decorations to the biscuit.

  11. Step 11:

Pour the grey water icing into a piping bag with a really thin nozzle and pipe on the grey decorations.

  12. Step 12:

Lastly, roll out a couple of black balls and stick these to the biscuits and then using the grey water icing, make a tiny dot on the black to show the shine.
