Our Irish soda bread recipe is easy to follow and tastes delicious. It takes just 45 minutes to make.

What makes Irish soda bread different?

The difference between this recipe and our soda bread recipe, is the inclusion of porridge oats and unrefined molasses sugar.

    Method

    1. Step 1

      Preheat the oven to 200C (fan 180C, gas mark 6) and line a baking sheet.

    2. Step 2

      Mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl, rubbing in the molasses sugar to separate the crystals.

    3. Step 3

      Make a well in the centre, add the buttermilk and bring together with clean hands into a wet sticky dough.

    4. Step 4

      Knead the dough very lightly and form into a round and place on the lined baking sheet.

    5. Step 5

      Using a sharp knife, slash the bread in a cross shape that reaches from edge to edge, about 1.5cm deep.

    6. Step 6

      Bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

    7. Step 7

      Cool on a wire rack with a clean damp cloth placed over the top. Eat warm or cold.

    Being Irish I know a good Soda bread when I eat it. I make this recipe a lot. It cuts well and eats well. Lovely with Kerrygold butter and home made marmalade.
