How to make plaited cheese and herb bread

The herbs compliment this lovely loaf perfectly. Spend a little time making this bread to impress your famil

This delicious plaited herb and cheese bread packs flavour into every fold of dough, making this one of our favourite savoury herb bread recipes.

Whilst this bread takes a little time to make, plaiting the dough before popping it into the oven can be therapeutic, so relax and enjoy baking this cheesy, herby loaf – who knows which other Italian shapes and style you could be creating once you get to grips with this?

For other savoury bread recipes which you can bake in your bread machines for ease, why not try our Gluten Free Spicy Chorizo & Olive Bread by Allinson's.

10 ingredients7 steps

    Method

    1. Step 1

Gently combine all of the bread ingredients together to form a dough, gradually add the water until you reach the desired consistency (you may not require the full amount).

    2. Step 2

Knead the dough in a mixer with a dough hook attachment for 5 minutes or by hand for 10 minutes. If mixing by hand knead for a further 5 minutes.

    3. Step 3

Split the dough into 3 equal pieces and roll into long sausage shapes, equal in length.

    4. Step 4

Plait the strands of dough together and tuck the ends underneath the dough to hold in place.

    5. Step 5

Place the dough on an oiled baking tray and glaze with the egg. Cover the dough with a lightly oiled cling film then prove until double in size.

    6. Step 6

Preheat the oven to 190°C (170°C fan, gas mark 5).

    7. Step 7

Sprinkle grated cheddar cheese over the top of the loaf. Bake for 35 minutes until golden.

I won 1st place at a small bread competition with this! I added extra bullion instead of salt, cheddar because I had no parm, and 4 strand braided it with 2 strands of turmeric coloured dough! Was very easy, beautiful and delicious!! Making it again right now, definitely a favourite
